DRI, also known as sponge iron, is the product of reducing iron oxide in the form of iron ore and steel plant wastes into metallic iron, below the melting point of iron and typically in the range of – °C.

Iron oxide is charged into shaft furnace, rotary kiln, or fluidized beds in the form of pellet, iron ore lumps, or fines. The reduction takes place using gaseous reductants (CO + H. Altekar, distinguished guest, ladies and gentlemen, It is indeed a great privilege to be present on the occa-ssion of the Inauguration of this international symposium on "Science and technology of sponge iron and its conv-ersion to steel".

The technology that is going to be dis-cussed here is not only new approach to steel making in India but also in many parts of the world. Kedar Pandeji, distinguished delegates to the Symposium, distinguished guests, ladies and Gentlement. It is my pleasant duty to extend to you all a very warm and hearty welcome to this inaugural function of the Symposium on 'Science and Technology of Sponge Iron and its Conversion to Steel' organised by the National Metall-urgical LaboratoryAuthor: V A Altekar.

The prime raw material for induction furnace is steel scrap, sponge iron and cast iron. The percentage of directly reduced iron in the burden differs from 10 to 95 percent, depending on its inventory and monetary value of manufacturing.

Large scale of steel formed through secondary route is alloy steel and plain carbon steel. [2]. This book provides a fascinating study of the very important emerging field of direct reduction in which iron ore is ‘directly reduced’ in the solid-state, using either natural gas or non-coking coal, to produce a highly metallised material, referred to as sponge iron (or direct reduced iron).

This intermediate product is subsequently melted in electric arc furnaces or induction furnaces 3/5(1). Sponge iron is a metallic product produced through the direct reduction of iron ore in the strong state.

It is a substitute for scrap and therefore is mostly applicable in making steel through the secondary route. The procedure of sponge iron making aims to expel the oxygen from iron ore. The level of metallization (expulsion [ ]. Tripathy, A. K.; Koria, S. C.; Saxena, M. Sometimes known as direct-reduced iron, sponge iron is a product that is produced using iron iron ore is often in the form of pellets or lumps, and is subjected to a reduction process that is created by the use of a reducing gas that emits from coal or a natural gas source.

This type of iron can be produced in several different types of furnaces, including coke or charcoal ovens.

Direct reduction refers to solid-state processes which reduce iron oxides to metallic iron at temperatures below the melting. irregular surface and the spongy structure of its particles, it has high green strength; and due to its low contents of oxygen and carbon, it has good compressibility.

However, in the world almost 80% of sponge iron is being produced by gas based DR process. the iron and steel industry with respect to geographic distribution, plant size, and processes used.

Fourteen of the installations in the iron industry were operated as mine-concentration plant combinations, although in some places the distance from the mine to the concentra tion plant was a few miles. Only one mine and one concentration. The effect of sponge iron on the sulphur concentration in the steel is also investigated.

The present results indicate that the sulphur content in the steel can be reduced from to wt% by increasing the iron proportion from sponge iron in the metallic input from 35 to 95 wt %. The book offers comprehensive coverage and critical assessment of various coal-based and gas-based direct reduction processes.

Besides dealing with the application of the theoretical principles involved in the thermodynamics and kinetics of direct reduction, the book also contains some worked-out examples on sponge iron s: Methods of crucible steel production.

Iron alloys are most broadly divided by their carbon content: cast iron has 2–4% carbon impurities; wrought iron oxidizes away most of its carbon, to less than %.

The much more valuable steel has a delicately intermediate carbon fraction, and its material properties range according to the carbon percentage: high carbon steel is stronger but more.

The iron-sponge vessel is either internally coated or clad with stainless steel. The superficial gas velocity (that is, gas flow rate divided by vessel cross-sectional area) through the iron-sponge bed is normally limited to a maximum of 10 ft/min at actual flow conditions to promote proper contact with the bed and to guard against excessive.Research at Purdue Calumeta s CIVS Earns National Award.
